A night of shining stars

HAHMP Gala

Awards, dinner, music, students, professionals, HAHMP and Houston on the Move all joined together for a spectacular night full of shining stars. Why, you may ask yourself. April 30 was HAHMPs 25th anniversary of the Sylvan Rodriguez Awards Dinner.

A variety of recognition was given in this eventful night with HAHMPs Vice President as the 2011 Gala Emcee, Daniella Guzman. To begin the night, Guzman announced the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award; this award was accompanied by a recap video of the winners’ career. This award was presented to none other than Former News Anchor for Fox Ch. 26, Mike Barajas.

As the night continued, a special video was shown with the accomplishments over Houston on the Moves year. This video included a recap of Marine, reporters, producers, guests, segments and the new opening graphics for the show.

In honor of the students’ hard work, the scholarships were presented. As the students were called one by one to receive their certificate, joy and a rush of adrenaline ran through the heart. This year I was one of the scholarship recipients among the ten and the rush of adrenaline ran though me the moment I stepped foot on the stage. This is a very special award for me, and I am grateful for this blessing. Aside from the award, a video was shown with the scholarship recipients’ stand-ups that we did at the workshops. There was also a surprise, we wondered about it for the longest time, when we were on the stage, they gave us a bag with the surprise. When we opened it, it was an Acer Iconia Tablet. This was a greatly appreciated reward.

The event didn’t end there; there was a live auction to raise funds for the scholarship. This auction was presented by HAHMP Past President, Vicente Arenas. As funds were raised and the auction came to an end, the music began and the stars danced the night away.
